The 20mph speed limit warning sign was put in place by the local council - but onlookers are saying it's a waste of money
Motorists in Ainsdale have slammed the sign as a 'joke' and 'waste of money' due to its location on a road junction where any driver would be unlikely to build up such speed.
A picture of the sign has since been posted to Facebook where it sparked outrage, the Southport Visiter reports .
One user commented: “Ridiculous! Did anyone bother to do a risk assessment of these roads? Surely, there is data which show accident hot spots where the speed limits should be reduced.”
Another said it was "pointless" and the limit "won't be policed anyway."

A third commented: “What's the serious or fatal rate in the areas where they've put the 20mph signs ? Let me think.....zero ?”
A spokesman for Sefton Council told the Visiter: "Current legislation states that all side roads leading onto a road with a different speed limit needs to have speed restriction signs indicating the speed limit in the side road and on the main road.
"In this instance the side road is off Guildford Road which, as a strategic route, has remained as 30mph.
"The cost of providing 20mph speed limits on all residential roads throughout the borough was funded from a Central Government Local Safety Scheme allocation aimed specifically at casualty reduction, and cannot be used to fund any other local services."
