The 18-year-old chose to act maturely after hearing the hurtful comments
Zendaya Coleman shone bright as a fashion darling as she arrived for her interview on Good Morning America today.
In fact, we reckon that she could have ended up on Fashion Police, if the show hadn’t taken a hiatus after the fall out from the race storm that followed Giuliana Rancic’s comments.
The 18-year-old beauty looked ready for spring in the checked shirt dress, wearing her hair in a statement ballerina bun.
Zendaya was asked about her reaction to the dreadlock comments on the show, after 40-year-old Fashion Police host Giuliana made a comment about her Oscars look and her dreadlocks.
“Honestly at that point, it wasn't really about me. I had to stop myself from being ignorant and being a kid,” she said.
“As a teenager you want to say the first thing that comes out of your mouth and I had to really take my time and think about what my parents taught me, which is – the important things in the world are your voice and your knowledge.”
The K.C. Undercover star feels strongly about the message that was being sent out when she posted her response on her social media page.
Zendaya said: “There is already harsh criticism of African American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair.
“My wearing my hair in locs on an Oscar red carpet was to showcase them in a positive light, to remind people of color that our hair is good enough.”
Zendaya, who is good friends with Kelly Osbourne – who has since quit Fashion Police in the fallout – continued: “Hopefully, whether it be a little girl out there or a young man out there that was able to read that and see positive change and be able to stand up for themselves in any kind of incident in their life, then I did what I'm supposed to do.”
