Nkululeko Habedi, whose stage name is Flabba, died in the early hours of this morning on Johannesburg, South Africa.
Police confirmed on Twitter that the 38-year-old rapper had been stabbed and passed away and that a woman has been arrested.
Police have told the BBC that the rapper's girlfriend, who was taken into custody after the stabbing, will be charged with murder and will appear in court "within 48 hours".
His younger brother told a South African reporter that he witnessed the killing.
He said she was woken up by a noise in the early hours of this morning at his brother’s home in Alexandra, Johannesburg.
He said he witnessed his brother’s death after the rapper was allegedly stabbed by his girlfriend during a "lover's quarrel" at around 2am.
Fans of the Skwatta Kamp band member have taken to social media to tweet about their shock over his death.
His bandmate, Sello "Nemza" Mofokeng, announced the musician's death on his Facebook page.
"It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the saddest news this morning that one of my brothers, Flabba, has passed away," Nemza wrote.
"May his soul RIP, he will never be forgotten. Gone too soon with so much potential still. Will always love him.
"Life is a precious gift and he lived every breath with a full heart."
According to Flabba's Facebook, he was working on new music and had last released a free download in December.
The artist was one of the founding members of award-winning Skwatta Kamp, which was formed in 1996 and rose to fame with their 2001 debut album Skwatta Kampain
