A man in India has successful operation to remove huge kidney - 20 times the size of normal organ
Surgeons in India have removed the world's largest kidney weighing 2.75 kg (6lb) - the same size as a newborn baby.
The massive organ was taken out the 45-year-old patient after he was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, in New Delhi, with severe abdominal pain.
He underwent emergency surgery but surgeons were left shocked by what they discovered.
Dr Manu Gupta, consultant and urological surgeon, at the hospital, said: "It took us three hours and a difficult dissection to remove the kidney that weighed 2.75 kg—20 times more than normal.
"It was even more complicated because the kidney was stuck to the surrounding intestines."
The man, who does not want to be identified, was suffering from Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease and had been on dialysis since 2014.
The second kidney was also removed a week later weighing 2.5 kg.
"This is a common genetic disease. The patient was carrying an extra 5kg of weight," added Dr Gupta.
Dr Vinant Bhargav, consultant nephrologist, said: "The patient is recovering and is now awaiting a kidney transplant.
"His survival will depend on how well his body accepts the new kidney."
The development of multiple kidney cysts results in a slow enlargement of the kidney, leading to chronic kidney disease. Normal kidneys weigh approximately 130 grams.
The Guinness Book of World Records reports a kidney weighing 2.15kg as the world's largest, which was removed from a patient in Maharashtra, in western India, in 2011.
