The-19-year-old gave birth to twins Evie and Oliver eight weeks prematurely and was immediately transferred to another department due to complications
An online fundraising appeal for the newborn twins whose mum died 48 hours after their birth has smashed its target.
Sophie Burgess, 19, gave birth to twins Evie and Oliver eight weeks prematurely and was immediately transferred to another department due to complications.
It was discovered that she had contracted septicaemia and her condition deteriorated before she died just 48 hours later.
Friend Ria Norris has set up a fundraising page in Sophie's memory to create a trust fund to help the babies as they grow up.
The Gofundme appeal has raised £1,255 in two days, more than double the £500 target.
On the page, Ria wrote: "We are raising funds for twins Oliver and Evie who tragically lost their mommy less than 48 hours after they were born.
"Sophie, 19, was so excited to become a mommy after being told she may struggle to have children.
"The twins were born 9 weeks prematurely weighing just over 3lb each and are currently still in the neonatal unit.
"We hope to raise money in Sophie's memory so that their dad Alex can use this towards items they may need or to put in a trust fund for the twins as we all know how expensive looking after children can be.
Sophie, from Telford, Shropshire, started to feel cramps so she and her partner Alex went to the town's Princes Royal Hospital before being transferred to Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital.
Both babies were born eight weeks prematurely. Oliver was born naturally and Evie by Caesarean section.
Sophie was conscious when they were born but never got to meet her children because she suffered complications and was transferred to another department.
Olivia and Evie were born on Wednesday evening at approximately 11:00pm and Sophie Burgess died on Friday morning.
Sophie's mother, Amanda Burgess, 46, said: "Sophie was my only daughter and despite being devastated we are all supporting each other as a family.
"Sophie and her boyfriend, Alex, lived at home with me while she was pregnant and we will be helping him alongside his family to bring up the twins when they get out of hospital.
"He has been an exceptional dad to Olivia and Evie so far.
"Our family friend who was like a sister to Sophie, Ria Norris, decided to set up thefundraising page for our girl so we could help Alex and the twins in the future."
