A British woman traveling in Australia fended off a man who slashed her neck open and tried to sexually assault her.
The backpacker, 23, was allegedly stabbed by the man repeatedly before fending him off with a knife on Wednesday, Sydney police say.
Her attacker is suspected to be her a 27-year-old Mexican national.
When the man allegedly attacked the young woman, he slashed her neck open with a knife - narrowly missing an artery, police said.
It is believed she momentarily broke free from him and grabbed a knife to defend herself.
She stabbed her attacker in the chest and he managed to escape before police arrived at the scene, it was claimed.
Police found the man two blocks away from the house and arrested him.
Terrified witnesses described seeing a girl in a towel with blood on her.

Samantha Swilks told the Daily Mail: "I saw a girl in a towel who looked really frantic with blood on her... then you could see there was a guy running down the street with blood on his shirt."
She described blood pouring from the stab wounds.

Other witnesses described hearing 'crazy screams' and seeing two people covered in blood.
Onlookers thought they were filming a movie because it was so horrific.
Detective Inspector Despa Fitzgerald told local reporters: "It's a terrible ordeal for someone to have to try and resist and arm themselves to actually get free from this person."
The suspect is currently in St Vincent's Hospital under police guard.

The alleged attacker was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he remains in a stable condition under police guard.
He has reportedly undergone surgery and is in a stable condition.
Police praised the woman for her bravery.
Det Insp Fitzgerald said: "'We appeal for any female or male to keep themselves safe, especially when they're travelling and sharing accommodation with people they don't know that well.
"It's just lucky it (the knife) didn't hit a major artery in those alleged attacks, and for him as well."
