Scots delicacy confusion for star's Twitter followers
Former Doctor Who star Karen Gillan confused her fans on her return to the UK, saying she was desperate for "a pile of chips with chippy sauce".
But followers in the US and the rest of the UK were left confused by the Scot's reference, as they didn't understand the mention of the sauce, which is put on chips in Edinburgh with salt.
The 27-year-old star has flown back to Scotland from America, to be a judge at the Edinburgh Film Festival.
She tweeted: "First thing I'm doing is buying a pile of chips with chippy sauce. Edinburgh folk: you know what I'm talking about."
But confused follower Dan Slott asked: "Serious question from all the Americans: What's chippy sauce, please?"
The actress replied: "The greatest sauce in existence."
Another fan, Brian Mack, asked: “Chippy sauce? You mean vinegar?”
The ingredients of the sauce - which is not commonly sold outside Edinburgh - are not widely known, but one of Gillan's followers, Al Kennedy, revealed: "Yeah, it's basically brown sauce (normally cheap off-brand stuff) but watered down with vinegar."
Gillan was delighted to be back in her homeland.
She said: "I can't tell you how excited I am to be coming home to Scotland.
"I'm real excited to be on the jury for the Edinburgh Film Festival! I'm gonna get to watch so many films! In Edinburgh!"
On her arrival in the Scottish capital, she revealed she still had food on her mind.
She added: "The eagle has landed and had a proper fry up. Good to be home."
