The Mad Max: Fury Road actor arrived in Cannes for this year's film festival and has spoken about his dark days
The Mad Max: Fury Road actor, who is the one of the biggest stars of this year's Cannes Film Festival, spoke candidly about his darkest days and how he's lucky he didn't die of an overdose.
Speaking to Yahoo! New Zealand, he said: "I would have sold my mother for a rock of crack. I was a shameful suburban statistic.
"I was told very clearly, 'You go down that road, Tom, you won't come back. That's it. All you need to know'. That message stayed with me clearly for the rest of my days. I am f***ing lucky to be here."
The hunk hit rock bottom in 2003 when he found himself in a pool of blood and vomit in his hotel and later checked into rehab, he's been clean and sober ever since but admits it's still a daily struggle.
The actor, who married Peaky Blinders actress Charlotte Riley last year and has seven-year-old son Louis, with his ex-girlfriend Rachael Speed, didn't become famous overnight.
He started to get bigger and bigger roles, starring in the likes of The Dark Knight Rises, Bronson and Warrior before becoming a Hollywood star.
"The trouble with Hollywood is they want you to be something, then they think you're who they wanted you to be," he said.
"I'm not a fighter. I’m a petite little bourgeois boy from London. People didn't sit up and take any notice of me until I started putting on weight, kicking people and being aggressive!”
After his lead role in the eagerly-anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road, Tom will appear as both of the notorious Kray twins in the drama Legend.
He might have to throw a few more punches before he can move onto different roles in his career.
